Make creamy or crunchy Peanut Butter at home that’s pure magic in under 15 minutes. Once you make peanut butter at home, you’ll never go back to store-bought again

There’s something deeply satisfying about making your own peanut butter from scratch – the hum of the blender, the slow transformation from gritty crumbs to glossy silk, and that warm, nutty aroma that fills your kitchen. This homemade peanut butter recipe is as simple as it gets, yet delivers a spread that’s richer, fresher. This is far more flavourful than anything you’ll find on a supermarket shelf.
With just peanuts, honey, and salt, you get a jar full of goodness that can swing between indulgent and wholesome depending on how you use it.
Why Homemade Peanut Butter is Worth It
Making peanut butter at home isn’t just about avoiding preservatives—it’s about control and character.
When you make it yourself:
- You decide how sweet or salty it should be
- You control the texture, from rustic and grainy to ultra-smooth
- You skip unnecessary additives like palm oil or stabilisers
- You get a pure, roasted peanut flavour that actually tastes like peanuts
And once you’ve made it once, it becomes second nature—almost like brewing your own perfect cup of coffee.
Creamy vs Crunchy Peanut Butter – What’s the Difference?
Creamy Peanut Butter – Smooth & Spreadable
For those who love a velvety finish:
- Blend continuously for 4–6 minutes. The longer you blend, the more emulsified and silky it becomes
- Perfect for:
- Spreading on toast without tearing it
- Swirling into smoothies
- Folding into batters and desserts
Texture goal: Glossy, pourable (when warm), and completely smooth on the tongue
Crunchy Peanut Butter – Textured & Nutty
For a more artisanal, rustic spread:
- Set aside a handful (2–3 tbsp) of peanuts before blending. Blend the rest until smooth.
- Pulse in the reserved peanuts at the end. This gives you little bursts of crunch in every bite and a contrast between creamy base and nutty texture
Perfect for:
- Toasts and sandwiches
- Topping oatmeal or yogurt
- Adding texture to desserts

Tips for the Best Homemade Peanut Butter
- Start with warm peanuts for the smoothest texture – Slightly warm peanuts release their natural oils more easily, helping the mixture come together faster and blend into a silky, spreadable butter. If your peanuts have cooled completely after roasting, a quick 30-second warm-up can make a noticeable difference.
- Be patient—the transformation is gradual but worth it– Peanut butter doesn’t turn creamy instantly. It moves through stages—crumbly, thick, almost dough-like—before finally loosening into a glossy, flowing spread. Trust the process and keep blending; this is where the magic happens.
- Use a sturdy food processor for best results – A powerful food processor handles the density of peanuts much better than a low-powered blender. It ensures even blending, prevents overheating, and gives you a smoother, more consistent texture without straining the motor.
- Avoid adding water at all costs – This is IMPORTANT! Even a small amount of water can cause the peanut mixture to seize and turn grainy or clumpy. Peanut butter relies on natural oils for its texture, so stick to dry or oil-based additions only.
- Add a little neutral oil only if needed -If your peanuts are particularly dry or the mixture isn’t loosening up, you can add a teaspoon of a neutral oil (like peanut or sunflower oil). This helps achieve that perfectly creamy consistency without altering the flavour too much.

How to Store Homemade Peanut Butter
Unlike commercial peanut butter, this homemade version has no stabilisers, so it behaves more naturally. Here’s how you can store the peanut butter –
- Transfer to a clean, airtight glass jar
- Store:
- At room temperature: up to 1–2 weeks (cool, dry place)
- In the fridge: up to 1 month
Natural Oil Separation: Over time, the oil may rise to the top. This is completely normal and actually a sign that your peanut butter is pure. Just give it a good stir before using—it comes right back together.
To Note:
- In the fridge: it becomes thicker and firmer
- At room temperature: softer and easier to spread

Ingredients
2 cup Raw Peanuts
1-2 tbsp Honey
Salt to taste
Directions
- Spread the raw peanuts on a baking tray and roast at 180°C for about 10–12 minutes or on a pan for 5-7 minutes. Let them cool enough to handle and remove skin if any. Skip this step if using roasted peanuts instead of raw
- Add the roasted peanuts to a food processor. Within the first minute, they’ll break down into a coarse, sandy mixture that almost looks like crushed biscuits. At this point, it may feel like it’s not going anywhere—but this is just the beginning.
- Keep blending. The peanuts will start clumping together into a thick, dough-like mass. This is where patience matters—the oils are slowly being released, even if it doesn’t look like it yet.
- The mixture loosens and transforms into a smooth, flowing butter with a glossy sheen. This is when you know you’ve hit the sweet spot. Scrape down the sides occasionally to ensure even blending.
- Add honey and salt. Blend again briefly until fully incorporated. Taste and adjust—this is where your peanut butter becomes uniquely yours.
- Decide your end goal: Blend longer for a luxuriously smooth, spreadable butter or stop earlier for a slightly rustic feel.
- Store as per instructions.
Notes
- For crunchy peanut butter, add in some peanuts to the creamy peanut butter and blend once.
- If using raw peanuts, roasting them is what unlocks their oils and deepens the flavour—don’t skip this step unless you already have good-quality roasted peanuts.
