Where Did Chocolate Salami Come From?
Chocolate Salami is believed to have originated in Italy and Portugal. In Portugal, you’ll often spot it in pastry shops and markets during festive seasons. It cleverly mimics a traditional meat salami, which is how it gets its playful name. But make no mistake — this “salame” is all about chocolatey indulgence.

Tips for the Perfect Chocolate Salami
- Use the best quality Dutch-processed cocoa you can find — it makes a big difference in that deep, luxurious flavour. You can also use regular unsweetened cocoa powder or just Store bought Hot Chocolate Powder for ease.
- Break your biscuits roughly rather than crushing them into crumbs to get the perfect mix of textures.
- Wrap tightly for a neat shape
- Let it chill completely so you get clean, beautiful slices every time.
You can also make your own Hot Chocolate Powder at home. Check out the recipe here.

hoursA no-bake, rich, and crunchy Chocolate Salami I first loved in Portugal. Perfect for chocolate lovers and impressively easy to make at home!
Ingredients
100 g salted butter, softened
100 g powdered sugar
1 whole egg
165 g marie biscuits, broken into uneven pieces
150 g Hot Chocolate Powder or (50 g Cocoa powder+60 g milk powder+50 g powdered sugar)
Aluminium foil or cling wrap, for rolling
Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together using a whisk or hand mixer until the mixture becomes light and pale. This step helps create a smooth, creamy base and gives the chocolate salami a softer texture.
- In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder, milk powder, and powdered sugar. Mix well to remove any lumps. Gradually add this dry mixture into the whisked butter mixture and stir until you get a rich, smooth chocolate mixture.
- Alternatively, if you prefer a quicker version, you can simply use store-bought hot chocolate powder instead of the cocoa, milk powder, and powdered sugar combination.
- Add the egg and mix thoroughly until fully incorporated. The mixture should look glossy, thick, and evenly combined.
- Roughly break the Marie biscuits into uneven chunks — avoid crushing them too finely. Fold them gently into the chocolate mixture until all the biscuit pieces are evenly coated. These biscuit chunks create the signature “salami” appearance once sliced and add a delicious crunch.
- Place the mixture onto a sheet of aluminium foil, parchment paper, or cling wrap. Using your hands or a spatula, shape it into a tight log, similar to the shape of a salami.
- Wrap the log tightly, twisting the ends to help hold its shape. Refrigerate for at least 4-5 hours, or preferably overnight, until completely firm and easy to slice.
- Once chilled, unwrap the chocolate salami and dust lightly with powdered sugar (optional) for a classic finish. Slice into rounds and serve chilled or slightly softened at room temperature.
